Baby Sleep Problems? – Soothe Them Away

Rock your baby to sleep. This has been a familiar theme for moms and families for as long as I can remember. What happens though, if you need to continue rocking for far longer than is reasonable or convenient? When a child seems unable to sleep without movement, what can you do?

Our first grandchild was like this – a terrible sleeper, he would only fall asleep with the sound of the bed moving and so we all spent hours rocking the little ‘monster’ in his crib, or even driving off at strange hours of the night, with him in his crib in the back seat of the car.

To be honest his father had been similar and we had to wait for him to grow out of it all those years ago.

But one day, when my daughter-in-law was at her wits end, she read an article recommended by a friend. It was all about the Graco Sweet slumber sound machine. She now swears by this wonderful piece of modern technology.

Of course, it would not make the movement, but it did make some wonderful sounds. This made it possible to get him off to sleep before we had hardly got into the swing of rocking the way we used to have to. The great thing about it is that you can add your own sounds, or rather the baby’s favourite sounds.

It doubles as a soft glow night light and comes equipped with 12 soothing sounds, from white noise to traditional lullabies. It also plays really convincing womb music and some tunes that sound like a music box too. The nature sounds are also very pleasing and the aspect of the machine we found really useful, was that we were able to attach an mp3 player. This gives a lot more scope and allows us to play car noises, or mom’s or dad’s voice through it too.

The actual machine is very small and so it can be taken everywhere, on holidays, visits to grandparents, wherever you wish. You do not have to be a technical expert, just able to plug it in and press buttons. Even though it is small it is actually quite sturdy and the switches especially are good quality. In fact the overall quality is surprisingly good, when you consider the price. You can play the machine using batteries or the a/c power connector, which is very convenient. It does not only help the baby fall asleep, but encourages him to stay asleep too, as it has an automatic timer. This switches it off after a while, so you can set it and forget it. You do not have to go back into the room and risk disturbing the baby.

The sounds it makes fill the room, which is surprising for such a small machine, especially as we live in a house with hard floors, so it is important that the noise is loud enough to cover normal moving about.

The improvement in family harmony when everyone gets enough good sleep is certainly worth a good deal more than the modest cost of this super sleep aid.

I can think of no better solution to baby sleep problems and just wish it had been available all those years ago, when mine were young.
